Why should I brush my teeth?

The purpose of oral hygiene is to prevent the build-up of plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria that constantly grows on the tooth's surface. Plaque adheres to the crevices and fissures of the teeth and generates acids that slowly eat away the protective enamel surface of the teeth, causing formation of cavities. Post Operative CareIn addition, the buildup of plaque can trap stains, lead to gum disease and eventual tooth loss. Fighting plaque is a life-long part of good oral hygiene care. However, it should be understood that regardless of the hygiene regiment you follow, it is impossible to keep your teeth free of bacterial challenge by brushing and flossing alone. Regular visits to your hygienist for professional gum therapy and teeth polishing promote oral health, and keep tooth decay at bay.

General Guidelines:

Maintaining oral hygiene should be a lifelong habit. An infant's gums and, later, teeth should be kept clean by wiping them with a moist cloth or a soft toothbrush. However, only a very small amount (the size of a pea) of toothpaste containing fluoride should be used since too much fluoride may be toxic to infants.

Good Oral Hygiene Prevents Tooth DecayFor adults who have dentures or dental bridges, maintainance of good oral hygiene is even more important. Artificial teeth tend to speed up acumulation of plaque that can lead to deterioration of remaining natural teeth.

Brushing and flossing should be performed thoroughly but not too vigorously. Rough mechanical action may irritate or damage sensitive oral tissues. Sore or bleeding gums may be experienced for the first few days after flossing is begun. However, bleeding continuing beyond one week should be brought to our attention. As a general rule, any sore or abnormal condition that does not disappear after 10 days should be examined by Dr. Vinson.
